The Master of Education in Postsecondary Administration and Student Affairs (ME PASA) program prepares graduates for a variety of professional roles in higher education administration and student affairs, from academic advising to residential life, admissions to athletic programs. PASA students acquire the knowledge, skills, and perspectives essential for success in any higher education setting. Graduates work in two- and four-year institutions, public research universities, private liberal arts colleges, graduate/professional schools, and for-profit institutions.
The PASA program requires 41 units consisting of both core and elective classes.
EDUC 508: Creating Communities of Interest Description: Designed to help students develop a learning “conceptual framework” for their educational experience in their Master’s program at the Rossier School of Education. This framework will also serve as the scaffolding for how students will later conceptualize professional problems as leaders in their field. EDHP 500: Foundations in Higher, Adult, and Professional Education Description: Provides an introduction to the roles and functions of higher education from historical and contemporary perspectives, and is designed for graduate students who aspire to serve in administrative and instructional capacities on college and university campuses. EDHP 563: Student Affairs Work in College Description: Designed as an introduction to and overview of student affairs work within colleges and universities including the following areas: a general overview of the theoretical basis of the profession, a sampling of current challenges facing student affairs departments and administrators, and an introduction to professional associations and journals. EDHP 687: Student Development in Higher Education Description: The content of this course will provide students with a foundation in the basic principles of adult and human development as applied to post-secondary education. EDHP 552: The Politics of Difference Description: This course explores the changing nature of student experiences on college campus, and focuses on two related domains: the diversity of human experience and the increasing globalization of educational environments. Sample Paper here: This was an external event paper where I wrote on an event based on a summit/conference I attended, I specifically wrote on access to higher education among African Americans.
EDHP 679: Legal Issues in the Administration of Higher Education Description: Analysis of selected legal issues related to the administration of higher education; emphasis on relations with students, faculty, staff, and selected policy issues. EDHP 551: Applied Educational Ethnography Description: This course will focus on qualitative approaches of inquiry for the social sciences. In particular, we will focus on dilemmas and issues that pertain predominantly to higher education. Producing and disseminating good qualitative research necessitates strong writing and speaking skills. EDHP 587: Fieldwork Description: The purpose of this course is to provide structured participation in supervised teaching or administrative activities. Location: ACUHO-I Internship at Pepperdine University. Another fieldwork internship was completed for Asian Pacific American Student Services (APASS). Pepperdine ACUHO-I Assessment: This is an assessment I helped put together, it is based on the social climate students feel in both the residence halls and dining halls.
EDHP 657: Management of Student Affairs in Higher Education Description: Concentrates on the role of the administrator in American higher education institutions. Members of the class are encouraged to develop, practice and critically examine alternative patterns of thinking and behavior in order to broaden their capacity to respond to the changing managerial and leadership needs in higher education organizations. EDHP 570: Research Methods and Data Analysis Description: The goal of this course is for students to learn how to use the methods and findings of educational research to address their professional needs, interests, and problems. They will learn about the nature of educational research, how to access and identify credible research literature about education, and how to read and critically evaluate articles that report research studies. Sample Paper here: This is a group paper I did on alcohol misuse among college freshmen, where our group incorporated various research methods in tackling the issue.
EDHP 616: Higher Education Seminar Description: This course is designed to help encapsulate the experiences of the master’s degree for students in the PASA program. The seminar serves as a resource to allow candidates to reflect upon the entirety of the masters program. The seminar will be summative, reflective, and also forward looking. EDUC 609: Academic Advising in Postsecondary Education Description: Academic advising is an opportunity to assist students to achieve academic success while addressing and supporting personal and vocational needs. This course will address this opportunity through the exploration of theory, practice, and professional development within the field of academic advising.
